Modern Pulp

Crime stories that expand upon the world of the comic books Home Free & The Black Wall.

4 Days with May

May was in a bad way, tied with her own nylon stocking to the cold pipes of a porcelain sink in the bathroom of a cheap motel. There just didn’t seem to be any good way out of it. After she heard gunshots, there was silence, and she was certain the cops were only minutes away. Once they found her, she’d have a lot of questions to lie her way out of, and if all that wasn’t bad enough, she really had to pee.

Spend four days with May and you’ll never forget the time you had.

This is the first in a series of crime shorts that take place around the events of the comic series Home Free by John Kratky & Michelle Lodge. The stories don’t necessarily tie directly into the comic, but they are within the world of Home Free. Sometimes involving direct events from the comics, or delving into a character’s past; the stories are for those who like their humor dark, their characters flawed, and their stories short.

Inheritor of the Dead

Meet Joe, a forensic cleaner with a wife, a kid, a couple of dogs, a mortgage, a car or two, a champion of good bourbon, and a collector of old horror comics. Of course, having a decent paying job doesn’t quite cover simple living anymore. While cleaning crime scenes, here or there, or maybe a lot, he just might take an item of value to make some extra cash.
Eventually, you take the wrong item. When Joe finds an ornate compass that only points West, his life quickly goes South. Inherit from the dead all you need, but they lay no claim on what comes your way.

Stop Through

Sara is on the run in a stolen vehicle after another relationship has gone south. The destination is Reno, her hometown and usual getaway, but no safe haven. The biggest little city is a harsh reminder of a troubled past she left behind.

During the long drive on lonely Highway 395, Sara picks up a hitchhiker, a young man heading to Mammoth who may hold darker demons than his casual nature lets on. Her straight shot north was
supposed to be easy, but the path ahead will test her, and the lessons learned will be hard.

Stop Through drops us back into the stormy life of Sara Donner, taking place in the years between the graphic novel The Black Wall, and the comic book series Home Free. This story will examine a pivotal chapter in her life, where the young girl always picking up he pieces becomes the woman who holds it all together, no matter how frail the thread.
